Porcelain garlic - Susan Delafield

The garlics described on this page belong to the Porcelain garlic variety. Porcelains are big, beautiful looking garlics with satiny white wrappers. They keep well, have a strong flavour, and do well under a wide variety of growing conditions. They usually have 4 to 6 large cloves with reddish brown clove skins. The smaller number of cloves means that when used as seed garlic they yield fewer plants. If the scapes are left on the plants to mature, they each produce hundreds of tiny bulbils which can be planted to produce full-sized bulbs in about three years. We highly recommend Porcelains for growing anywhere in Canada

Dan's Russian

Dan’s Russian comes from Dan Jason at Salt Spring Seeds. A garlic with medium heat. It has a lovely flavour and fries well.

Fish Lake 3

Fish Lake 3 has big cloves and bulbs; good strength and taste. Fish Lake 3 is listed in the Seeds of Diversity Canada catalogue of heritage varieties.

Georgian Crystal

Georgian Crystal has good flavour and is one of the milder Porcelains. Our new stock comes from Golden Acres Farm. Georgian Crystal is listed in the Seeds of Diversity Canada catalogue of heritage varieties.

Great Northern

A Porcelain from Al Picketts of Eureka Garlic on Prince Edward Island. One of Al's favouites. Great Northern is listed in the Seeds of Diversity Canada catalogue of heritage varieties.

Italian Porcelain

Italian Porcelain is a very nice Porcelain that grows well.

Leningrad

Leningrad is a medium hot Porcelain. Leningrad became a staple thanks to its excellent flavour, ease of growing and good storage life. Leningrad is listed in the Seeds of Diversity Canada catalogue of heritage varieties.

Music

A favourite of growers and gardeners. One of the milder Porceains.

Newfoundland Tall

This Porcelain came as a bonus with the Newfoundland Heritage (a Rocambole) that we received from Peter Sobol in Newfoundland. Delicious, medium strength.

Northern Québec

Good strength, flavour, size and vigour. One of our hottest Porcelains. Popular with growers because it grows so well under all conditions. Northern Québec is listed in the Seeds of Diversity Canada catalogue of heritage varieties.

Romanian Red

A very flavourful, medium hot Porcelain that grows very well. From L&O Farms. Romanian Red is listed in the Seeds of Diversity Canada catalogue of heritage varieties.

Rosewood

A Porcelain from L&O Farms. Delicious and mild for a Porcelain. Bulbs are small for a Porcelain. Rosewood is listed in the Seeds of Diversity Canada catalogue of heritage varieties.

Susan Delafield

Susan Delafield is one of our hottest and most flavourful Porcelains, a leading garlic. It grows tall, produces large bulbs, and is more tolerant of wet conditions than most garlic varieties. It is a variant of Music that is distinctly different and has been growing true for us since 2004. We got it from Dan Jason of Salt Spring Seeds. Dan said he named it after the research scientist who sent it to him. Susan Delafield is listed in the Seeds of Diversity Canada catalogue of heritage varieties.

One of the milder Porceains.

Yugoslavian Porcelain

Yugoslavian Porcelain was obtained from a grower in the region and is common in the Okanagan and the Kootenays of British Columbia. Yugoslavian Porcelain is one of our hottest Porcelains. Grows and keeps well.

Please take our comments on flavour with a generous pinch of salt. The apparent strength and flavour of a strain of garlic is an individual perception. Different people under the same circumstances can have diametrically opposed views on the palatability and heat of a strain of garlic.
